Did you know Thanksgiving could be a scary holiday for your teeth and gums? Well, it’s true, which is why our Vernon Woods Dental Care Associates dental team encourages you to take good care of your smile this holiday season. You can do so by doing the following things:

-Don’t snack all day: With plenty of food lying out on the table all day, it’s best to avoid snacking on it. Snacking on a regular basis makes it hard for your teeth to rejuvenate and fight particles that create tooth decay. When you take breaks between meals, your teeth build up the strength they need to chew your next meal and keep your smile safe.

-Be careful with dessert: As you may already know, sugar is an enemy to the teeth, so it’s important that you limit yourself when eating dessert. If possible, drink a glass of water after eating the sugary treat so the water can wash away some of the harmful substances.

-Brush your teeth: Make sure to brush your teeth after you’re done eating. Brushing will help you clean your teeth from the particles that threaten your teeth and destroy your smile. As you brush, make sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. However, if you ate or drank an acidic product, it’s best to wait at least 30 minutes before brushing.

-Wear a mouthguard: Many people like to play a friendly game of football on Thanksgiving Day. If your family follows this tradition, then it’s best to wear a mouthguard while you play. You never know what hard, forceful object will hit your mouth, and wearing a mouthguard will help you protect your teeth when it does.
